FYI, Nicolas' suggestion #7 and #8 worked perfectly for me.

After downgrade of Xorg and reboot, no X was configured. I dLogged into
tty and followed with

$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-173

After reboot all was perfectly OK with graphics.  My WLAN network  cards
didn't initialise on first reboot, but was fine on second reboot --
probably totally unrelated.

I have Dell Insprion 8600 with the following card
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation NV34M [GeForce FX Go5200 
64M] (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])
