FYI, Nicolas' suggestion #7 and #8 worked perfectly for me. After downgrade of Xorg and reboot, no X was configured. I dLogged into tty and followed with
$ sudo apt-get install nvidia-173 After reboot all was perfectly OK with graphics. My WLAN network cards didn't initialise on first reboot, but was fine on second reboot -- probably totally unrelated.
