My Ubuntu AMD64 machine was also seeing hard lockups, with 9800GT video
card.  Running Ubuntu 12.04 (3.2.0-31-generic).  After trying to the
latest Nvidia Driver (Driver Version: 304.51), without success I
switched video cards (6600GT)

Now no lockups after 3 days but I am seeing the following "NEW" logs in the 
kern.log.  Not sure if this is related but maybe the following logs in kern.log 
would cause my 9800GT to fall of the bus and cause a hard lock.
