I can confirm this problem, I'm experiencing the same symptoms on a dell
dimension 2350 with a pentium 4 2.0 MHz, same chipset, karmic, etc.

Reinstalling does not fix the problem, but using the older (2.4) intel
xorg driver significantly helped. My processor usage dropped from about
90% while watching movies to about 50% (which is still too much) after
changing drivers, but I still can't watch hulu (very choppy).

Also if your screen does freeze do this:
1) press control, alt, and f2
2) you'll come to a black screen that says your computer name and login (e.g. 
'computer name' login:)
     i) login in with your user name and then enter your password
3) then when you've reached the command line enter:
     i) sudo /etc/init.d/gdm restart
    ii) enter your password 

This should bring your screen back.
