to resort to the Ctrl-Alt-F2 then back to Ctrl-Alt-F1 trick for the

Also confirming that removing xserver-xorg-video-intel solved the
problem for me too.
I did not also have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/20-intel.conf. However, I did
have /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/01-amdgpu-pro-px.conf which was trying to load
the intel driver that was just removed:

gone. I can test it on weekends, but this weekend it is running fine

I'm using Nouveau with a Nvidia NV98 (GeForce 9300M GS) with a laptop
(Dell Vostro 1520) and an external monitor. When booting, sddm crashes;
the second time it runs fine (after restarting sddm):

With my ATI HD 7790, I tried the Open Source driver but it doesn't
support HDMI audio over DisplayPort. Now I'm not using DisplayPort but I
also had no luck because I'm using now two monitors and it also doesn't
support that (at least for me).

When the PC boots it shows the sddm login, but if I switch to the first
virtual console using Ctrl+Alt+F1, the console is blank. The other
consoles are in the same state. Only the virtual console with the sddm
login, is running fine.

I have Ubuntu 12.04 fully updated some days ago.
I cannot save my monitor config resolution. By default it is started
with 1280x1024 but my monitor support on WIndows 1920x1200.
