The issue is caused by /etc/X11/Xsession.d/10fglrx file incorrectly
setting driver path. File was left by previous fglrx driver installation
- I used to have ATI card.

When booting Karmic with fglrx enabled the only thing I get after
starting KDM is black screen. I cannot switch to tty from there. It's
possible to workaround the issue by booting into recovery mode, and in
root shell disable fglrx in

I just did an upgrade to karmic and have no working xserver:
vesa - drop to console
radeonhd - same as above, occasionally freeze
ati - cursor and black screen, occasionally freeze
fglrx - dkms fails to build module, no errors in make
