System boots into black screen unless nomodeset is used

System MSI-7437 running Quantal Alpha 3 boots into black screen unless
nomodeset is used. Video uses Intel i915.
Booting with nomodeset, causes user to see BIOS loader image in garbled
screen and intel driver loading. Resolution is limited to 1024x768 and
800x600.

If I turn off the LCD display in my Dell Inspiron 910 and turn on the
external display set to 1024x768, I see an 800x600 display in the top
right of a 1024x768 display (see attached screenshot). I can move the
mouse outside the 800x600 area, but no windows show up.
