My Unity Launcher now works after installing the January 17, 2018 update
from the Software Updater(gnome-software).
I'm a newbie so I wasn't able to use the fixes noted in the other
comments but after the install, I clicked on the side panel and the
Dash, File Manager, Chromium browser and the

I'm a newbie and after updating Ubuntu 16.04 on Jan 5, 2018, I
experienced launcher disappearing when running over with mouse, windows
disappearing and appearing, Dash not working and cannot shutdown. I
