Just for fun I did a clean install of 12.04. Did updates then went
through the precise proposed steps again.
I didn't get the crash, but again am stuck in 640x480. Uninstalling both
nvidia-173 and nvidia-173-updates brings me back to 1024x768.
lspci | grep VGA
01:00.0 VGA compatible
I did an ubuntu-bug nvidia-173 and have attached the apport here.

Hi,
I installed the updates via the steps indicated in the EnabledProposed
document.
After restart, the system is stuck in low graphics mode with a warning
that my display could not be determined.
Uninstalled the update and is back on desktop with 1024x768 resolution
and default driver.

I've noticed the updated driver, how do I go about installing this? I
have installed the x-swat repo and currently have the nvidia-current
driver activated but not being used.
I tried downloading the nvidia-graphcis-drivers-173-updates deb and
installing with dpkg, which installed
