tried to capture the behaviour in a photograph...see attached.
black bars jump over the screen when a button is pressed or menus are opened.
2d unity works fine...just the 3d version has these problems.

just ran the usual 'additional drivers' app to install the fglrx drivers. all
other packages up to date. first time this has happened with a stable release
for me.
machine would boot to desktop after this error. had to run
apt-get remove fglrx
to rememdy the problem.
