OK I got some advise on the #Ubuntu+1 IRC channel. It seemed the new new
proprietary NVidia driver (that was still installed though not running)
had messed up the Intel driver somehow. Completely removing it helped.

After upgrading to Karmic Beta, my Lenovo laptop doesn't return properly
from suspend-to-ram. Trackpad and possibly mouse is dead, and Num Lock
is suddenly on. This was also a bug in earlier distros but has been
fixed at least since Intrepid.
