In my situation (and old GeForce Go 6400), with a fresh install of ubuntu 14.04
(some weeks ago all worked ok):
1) with nouveau drivers I can login but using dash hangs X (strange visual
effects)
2) switching to nvidia makes screen blank at login
I only solved switching to gnome from unity.

I have this problem in 12.04 LTS too, after upgrading to HWE kernel and
always happens when I launch virtualbox (downloaded from virtualbox site
as the one packaged with ubuntu doesn't run anymore after the above
upgrade).
My VGA controller is NVIDIA Corporation G72 [GeForce 7200 GS / 7300 SE]
In 10.04 the bug seems to be fixed.

I was wrong: X doesn't hang up when slideshow is launched (alt-tab runs
ok when the issue happens and I have also found a way to open gnome menu
and so also a console), but it shows a grey screen with a blank
rectangle on the left-top. Pratically when I launch slideshow the
selected photo is not
I make another precisation after other tests: not always the photo
selected changes to black.

Bryce, I made some tests on Jaunty as you asked to me, and I haven't be able to
reproduce the issue that sometimes (even if it happens seldom) happens on
Hardy. So I think that the bug may be marked as fix released on Hardy.
I also think, at this point, that Jaunty and Karmic may be deleted on
Nicklas, in which distro did you notice this issue?
