I am running precise (with xorg-edgers ppa clearly). I didn't realise
this bug was relevant only to systems running quantal? I am seeing the
same issue but ignore my comments if not appropriate here.

I just installed today's new 304.30 nvidia driver to see if this bug is
fixed but it aborted within 10 minutes:
[ 613.297325] Xorg[1563]: segfault at b4e2f000 ip b47e6960 sp bfb15cc0
error 7 in nvidia_drv.so[b4701000+6b5000]
Tried with kernel 3.5.0-8.
This 304.30 version also exhibits a new
Further to my comment #207 above, today nvidia have quickly released
v304.32 driver which has fixed the blue tint across SDL apps that I
mentioned. But 304.22 still seg faulted on me after a couple of hours as
per this bug.
[ 6026.027634] Xorg[1570]: segfault at b4ebc000 ip b4872e90 sp bf885aa0
That second sentence above should be 304.32, not 304.22 (why is there no
edit function on this bug tracker?)

Title:
@ste-goddard this bug is not specific to Ubuntu. Search around the
web/forums and you will find it happens on all linux distributions. I've
seen it reported on Arch, Gentoo, and Fedora at least, wherever people
are using v295.* and later nvidia drivers.

I installed new nvidia 304.22 driver which was released today but it
crashed with a segmentation fault within 3 hours.

I don't know if anybody is following my story here but I noticed an
xorg-edgers kernel update from 3.5.0.3.3 to 3.5.0.4.4 today so I thought
I would give it a test running Unity. Note, as my previous comment I can
run kernel 3.2 forever without issue. So I upgraded and rebooted to
3.5.0.4.4 and I
Well I have determined that for me this problem is caused by linux
kernel 3.5.0-3 (pulled in via linux-image-generic) which was installed
on my system via xorg-edgers ppa. I removed this and went back to the
generic precise kernel which is currently 3.2.0-26 and my lockups have
gone. I am still
Well this just happened again to me with same PFIFO_CACHE_ERROR nouveau
errors in dmesg. Although this time it happened on gnome-shell, which
is my normal desktop where I have never seen this before. I have only
had this happen on those rare times I try Unity. I had updated earlier
today and
So I decided to use Unity for a while. Locked up twice within 10 mins,
second time without skype 4 running so not skype related. Unity/Compiz
brings on this problem MUCH more than gnome shell/mutter.

Further to my comment #7 above, I noticed an xorg-core update today so I tried
Unity for a while but it locked up within 30 mins. System died over about 20
secs, i.e. my mouse became sluggish then after about 10 secs it stopped moving
completely. Music player stopped a few secs after that and
@brigham, I have used nvidia drivers with my system (8600 GT) for a few
years without problems but since ubuntu 12.04 (i.e. nvidia v295.33,
v295.40, v295.49, v295.53, v302.07, v302.11, v302.17?), I suffer an xorg
segmentation fault within a hour or two of booting when using nvidia
driver (and that
I'm using nouveau from xorg-edgers ppa on 12.04 and I think I am having
this same bug just recently. My Unity 3D session will hang anywhere from
1 minute to a few hours after I boot. Sometimes the entire UI locks up,
other times the UI locks up but my mouse cursor will still move (but
can't select
Re comment #133 above from wlx, I have experienced this problem with my
8600 GT card on all nvidia versions since I installed ubuntu 12.04, i.e.
295.40 and all versions through to 302.17. I have tried the installers
from nvidia site, and also xorg-edgers ppa. I never had this problem in
the 4
Like danrgmc above in comment #120, I just tried nvidia driver v302.17
also (via xorg-edgers ppa) but found it seg faulted within a couple of
hours. My 8600 GT card has worked fine for years with ubuntu but this
seg fault started with Ubuntu 12.04 at nvidia v295.40 and has occurred
for all the
Here's my experience with a nvidia 8600GT card on ubuntu 12.04. All previous
ubuntu releases have worked fine with with proprietary driver over many years.
Installed clean 12.04 and using gnome-shell + gnome3 team ppa, nvidia driver
295.40 did a segmentation fault after a hour or so mainly just
As I reported on the ubuntu forums at
http://ubuntuforums.org/showpost.php?p=11904367postcount=8 the 295.49
driver seq faulted on me 3 times in the 4 hours I ran it.
