Fixed my computer:
I ran:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure libpam-runtime
and reset all the settings to default.
Computer now works again!

I have reported this before, but it appears to have been merged with

The wallpaper appears for a second when I move the mouse, but disappears
again.

I am now on kernel 2.6.32-19-generic-pae. The problem appears to have
gone away. Uptime 6 hours without a crash - was previously failing to
achieve 30 minutes

Randomly describes this bug perfectly. The laptop
can work for hours without an issue, or it can
crash after only 2 minutes of usage.
Computer does not have a chance to write anything to disk - so it seems
impossible to determine the circumstances leading up to the crash.
