I have the same problem with ubuntu lucid and samsung screen. when using hdmi, resolution goes up to 1920x1080 but desktop menus are out of the screen frames. more than this, if using vga cable, only resolution possible is now 1360x768,and some other below, leaving black lines on the sides of the screen, as if 4/3. with ubuntu karmic i had higher resolutions available also with vga cable.
