Thanks a lot for pointing me to the current version which works very
good, all problems gone. There's only a constant, minimal microstutter
left, which is fine to me.

Title:
package nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04.1 failed to
install/upgrade: nvidia-current kernel module failed
Public bug reported:
just compiled kernel 3.0.8 with make oldconfig... hardware drivers gui
erroneously showed nvidia driver as still being active. the card is an
xfx nvidia 7600gt 256mb rev a.
ProblemType: Package
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 10.04
Package: nvidia-current 195.36.24-0ubuntu1~10.04.1
provides the option to continue and try to
build the kernel module anyway, which i did, which worked perfectly.
btw-with kernel 3.1.0, installed from kernel.org source, the nvidia
285.05.09.pkg.run doesn't throw the gcc error, it just compiles the
module and works for me.
so, this needs to be closed

IBM Thinkpad R32, bad graphics
Same behavior for an Acer 751, which has the same chipset.
Had to to downgrade kernel from 2.6.28-13 to 2.6.28-11, to have the graphics
