It looks like my problem is a different bug so I'm going to open a new
one. I should say that my problems have disappeared when I used the
mainline kernel:

I have been getting random drm-related lockups with ubuntu's kernel. So
far with mainline 2.6.32-02063203-generic there have been no lockups
suggesting that this behavior might be ubuntu-related.
I've attached a kernel warning and trace that immediately preceded the
lockup.
