Abandoning that option, I followed directions in KernelModeSetting: Intel step 1 did NOT help: "echo options i915 modeset=0 > /etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf" Nor did step 2: "...need to run sudo update-initramfs -u" The only thing that helped wasstep 3: add xorg.conf, specifying: Driver "vesa".
