KMS on Lucid has the same low performance than on Karmic, regarding graphic
effects like Compiz. To have better results (more than double, if we take
compiz benchmark as reference) I have to disable KMS by starting the system
with the option "nomedeset".

I note a minor inconvenience to any advancement of kernel or better, for each
cleaning of the old kernel. Usually after a small trial of the new kernel, I
use delete the old, apparently without problems. When I restart the system I
find this notice:
