@ LGB etc: My system also will not work without KMS. In fact, the 2.6.34
rc3 kernel with modeset=0 will not complete boot either. One peculiarity
on my system with kernel 2.6.32-21 is that setting modeset=1 via
/etc/modprobe.d/i915-kms.conf does not w

Setting i915.modeset=1 via grub at boot resulted in a successful launch
of X & gdm for me, (given the same symptoms as V. Seesink ie no log
indicators of problem)
