The latest major update has been been added to the AMD fglrx drivers,
and packages need to be built for Ubuntu.
Unlike 15.5-15.9 this is a major improvement, almost as big as last
year's "Omega" update, not just a minor bugfix release.

ago, but the driver has yet to be added to the repositories.
Some of the patches are no longer necessary, such as the OpenCL provides
patch to prevent dependency issues with some OpenCL dependent
The open Source drivers don't work perfectly for everything.
For desktop use, I would certainly recommend the Open Source drivers
over the proprietary ones. They actually run WebGL and JavaScript
canvas functions faster.
However, for gaming, the Open Source drivers currently lack full OpenGL
I remember also running into another package or two that won't install
without xorg-video-abi-15.
The best method would be adding the proper provides to the appropriate
package.
However, if this is provided by multiple packages we should go with the
slightly messier option of using a
