Please consider installing gpointing-device-settings package. Then enabling the horizontal scroll settings in the configration utility in SystemprefrencesPointing devices seems to fix the issue as horizontal scroll works fine in sony VGNCW16FG having synaptics touchpad .. If the problem persist
