boot disk, tested it on another computer (the burn and content was
verified) and tried it with this currently unusable presario. Here's
what happened when I tried 10.04 desktop amd64 boot disk:

Most notably during shutdown: the screen becomes vertical (sometimes
horzontal) lines of random colored pixels and the system hangs. Using
ctrl+alt+r e i s u b can generally reboot. Otherwise shutting down the
laptop requires a hard shutdown holding the power button for abou
