This bug still re-appears in lucid. The underlying problem seems to be that /etc/init.d/failsafe-x.conf is in the wrong package. x11-common should know nothing about gdm and yet here is a gdm referencing file, so as soon as you stop using gdm 2.3, the system is broken. This file should be in the
