One workaround is to downgrade the xserver-xorg-input-synaptics to
version 1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5.
sudo apt-get install xserver-xorg-input-synaptics=1.5.99.902-0ubuntu5

There is definitely a bug in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics, probably
related to #801988. However, I am filing this as a bug against Xorg but
because Xorg outright crashes in response to the unhandled event.
