Public bug reported:

I have two Ubuntu 12.04 machines attached to a 2048x1152 screen via a
KVM switch.

Each time I switch it comes up with the wrong resolution, *until* I
click on System Settings>Displays, when it suddenly and with no further
action on my behalf correctly identifies the display and sets the right
resolution. (It may only happen after Ubuntu has locked the screen after
a timeout)

As far as I recall, this is new for 12.04. 11.10 did it right, giving
the correct resolution on switching with no further action required.
