I have the very same problem.
When I connect the VGA connector, even if no monitor attached to it,
Ubuntu just freezes. Nothing to do, completely hanged. Not even "Ctrl
Alt F1" or similar. Just restart works.
I am on Ubuntu 13.04 with all the updates.

really high that it's a different underlying bug with similar symptoms.
And since untangling bug reporter after the fact is messy we'd like to
