Nvidia now prints this in dmesg every time:

Some modest observations on #2
- In almost 7 years of using Ubuntu (all with Nvidia binary drivers)
full graphics freezes have been very rare and hardly associable with
framebuffer

This change has been applied in quantal and as a direct result has made
boot splash unusable for all users when the nvidia drivers are installed
(bug #1063969). This is not something that should have been changed
during freeze due to a vague concern that the driver does not interact
well.

While the NVIDIA driver often happens to work with consoles other than
the standard VGA text mode console without any user-visible symptoms,
any console configuration besides VGA text mode is not supported by the
driver, and use of any alternative consoles is directly linked, in many
