Workaround. I made up a /etc/grub.d/06_custom copying the
/boot/grub/grub.cfg entry for Ubuntu omitting the word splash boots
O.K.
Fine for me, not so good if anyone else has an Acer Aspire 5253
installing amd64 12.10
Note, using Advanced Options boots to a horrible offset slow 1024x768
screen
