It looks like bug 949641 Running this command before purging/removing fglrx packages does the trick: sudo /usr/sbin/update-rc.d -f atieventsd remove -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu-X, which is subscribed to fglrx-installer in Ubuntu.
