One is an Ubuntu 13.10 and the other is a Xubuntu 12.04 LTS.

I tested it. I used the same KVM, but different computer and with 14.04
daily build (without upgrades) there was not problem although the
problem has been arounf for last few Ubuntu releases.

Bill Mattocks, this bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been

You can get around this by saving the edid data from the monitor to a
file and load the file at X startup instead of querying the monitor
every time. Run nvidia-settings, select your monitor and Acquire
