Unless you narrow the problem to the X driver specifically, probably
better to just handle it as a gnome-power-manager issue.

It's similar, but not a dupe. That bug is when the user logs in. This
bug happens before I log in. It's as soon as lightdm starts, so I can't
see anything to log in, therefore it couldn't be my session settings as
the other bug indicates.

X server starts with brightness at lowest possible level
I have the same problem my Acer Aspire 5737Z. I use the nvidia (310)
driver. I have have the luck that the lowest brightness is 50% on my
machine. But it is also annoying.
