This is possibly a duplicate of https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-shell/+bug/1046118 I have updated to all the latest version of unity, lightdm, gdm settings, kernel. This was still causing issues. Downgraded kernel from uname -a Linux 3.5.0-23-generic #35~precise1-Ubuntu SMP F
