I have same issue ..turns out the brightness setting is not saved and is 0
every time I boot.
If I use the Fn + brightness Up key on every boot then I can see the screen
again.

I have this same issue, I have confirmed with the mainline kernels that
both 3.8.9 and 3.8.10 work properly. 3.8.8 and Ubuntu's 3.8.0-19 both
give me a black screen. If I plug something into the display port then
I get a login screen there, but there is no way of getting said login
screen onto my

starters? Then can you see if you can log in remotely to the broken
machine?

chris, I can't do this, because I can't enter the session :(, I
receive a black screen suddenly :(, I only boot with the other kernel,
3.7:(, and I found that the same error happens in other distros with
kernel 3.8...
