Thank you for the suggestion. Indeed the problem seems to be absent in
13.04. So I suppose this one can be closed -- I would have done it
myself but don't see how.
I echo your points about Xv clearly beating OpenGL in video playback,
but at least there is some performance gain over Flash...

I've observed similar in 12.10 and it appears to be gone in 13.04. But
it the gl video pipeline still much slower (higher CPU overhead) than
Xv.
