Intel s1200 btl, sandy bridge, (nvidia nvs300 -> not installed), amd64

WHAT
After start-up, the acounts screen is given. When entering password, the 
kubuntu splash remains. No desktop or other buttons appear.

WHEN
after last update on Friday (yesterday). More specific: dist-upgrade as two 
packages where not updated.
(udate is done twice a day)

CONSISTENCY
Rebooted more then 5 times. Same result.

ACTIONS DONE
- Starting in recovery mode: earlier kernel: same effect
- Recov. Mode Shell ->  apt-get updat/upgrade gives: cannot connect to server
- Shell aptitude -> missing package xorg
