Same here [Linux localhost 3.13.0-24-generic]. Uknown dislpay appears on
every reboot, no matter I've plugged external display or not.

I am attaching screenshot of my laptop desktop.
No second monitor is connected.
Screen on the right is 'Unknown screen'.
I have exactly same problem on my other laptop. It also has Intel and
Nvidia graphics.

I am not sure if this is the same problem or not. I have a similar
issue. I opened a Bug #1296020 for ubuntu 14.04 trusty. This is critical
to me. I can NOT use gdm and gnome-shell at all because of this bug. gdm
failed to start because of this. gnome-shell shows a black (off) screen.

A workaround is to go to System Settings then to Screen Display.
You'll see a screen labeled Unknown Display.
Click on this and you'll see that the On/Off 'switch' below will now
show On.
Click it to Off and the effects of the Unknown Screen will go away.

I can confirm this bug is still alive and well. I'm experiencing it both
on Ubuntu 13.10 and 14.04.
I'm attaching my results from xrandr on 14.04*.
Perhaps worth noticing, I've had no success disabling the unknown
display with the solution posted here
Giuliano Tognarelli Buono-core, this bug was reported a while ago and
there hasn't been any activity in it recently. We were wondering if this
is still an issue? If so, could you please test for this with the latest
development release of Ubuntu? ISO images are available from
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

I only have this issue when I'm using the nouveau driver. If I disable
the nVidia card and the BIOS and I'm using the integrated i7 video card
I don't have this problem.
