...But not always. Sometimes the boot-up gets to a normal greeter
screen. Often as not, though, I get a blank gray greeter screen. I can
type my password blindly and get in to the GDM, usually. But sometimes I
can't -- because I can't see the underlying screens and have to guess
what field I'm typing into, etc.

I can go to a console via Ctr+{[1-6]}  and restart the GDM and then the
greeter screen is normal and I can log in normally.

Also, between screen modes at boot-up and on entering the GDM, there is
ugly flickering and screen garbage that lasts a good second or so.
