If I downgrade back to xserver-xorg-video-intel_2.99.910-0ubuntu1 then
- all is well unity loads as expected

3.16.0-9 i386 32 bit boots normally. Very rarely boots to desktop and
cursor no unity.
3.16.0-9 amd64 always boots to desktop no unity. X is up, compiz hence
unity are not.
3.16..0-8 rarely boots to unity, usually to desktop and cursor only.
Viewing utopic as a black box, characteristics are

Updated to -7 compiz and unity fail, X11 running fine to desktop no
panels.
Updated to -8 first boot from dead cold overnight boots O.K. Reboots
compiz and unity fail.

Can also be noted that a gnome-flashback compiz session is likewise affected
