I'm working on a Panasonic Toughbook CF-C1 that also has this issue, though I can only rotate the display manually on this model (not sure by other thinkpad comments if it is implying an automatic screen rotation, perhaps by gyroscope, so I wanted to be sure to make the distinction just in case).

I have a ThinkPad X230T running 15.04 with Unity. I confirm that thinkpad-rotate flip causes the screen to go black with just the cursor visible and responsive to the window it's over (albeit with stylus input inverted relative to the screen). ctrl+alt+F1 then ctrl+alt+F7 serve to restore the windo
