Ok.. sorry for the delay. I booted a live image of
http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/daily-live/current/.
With that I can access the default window manager -> Either problem solved by
upgrade, or something has gone rogue in m< system during upgrade or it has to
do with GDM

I updated the bios with the proposed 1.38 version.
the dmidecode commands output the following:
sudo dmidecode -s bios-version && sudo dmidecode -s bios-release-date
output the following:
V1.38
