I forgot all about this bug until the tag of cscc was added. As reported previously the machine is now running 18.04.2 LTS fairly well. All updates including kernels have been done, Graphics now state Intel® Ironlake Mobile and the /etc/default/grub file contains the line GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFA
