Thanks for the prompt response. I removed 'nomodset' and ran 'sudo update-initramfs -u' but still the secondary monitor is not detected. In Display setting it shows 'Unknown Display'. I've tried selecting the 'nvidia-driver-390' from software & updates > additional drivers but still no luck. -

Thanks for the prompt response. I've deleted the /etc/X11/xorg.conf.failsafe and restarted the laptop. But still I cannot set a proprietary driver and cannot plugin a secondary monitor. Given below are the only two driver versions that was available as I updated Ubuntu 16.04 to 18.04. 396.24.02
