Technically Wayland was never working with the Nvidia driver. Even if you do remember to use nvidia-drm.modeset=1, the problem remains that Ubuntu's mutter builds are missing EGLStreams support. So when the "Ubuntu on Wayland" option was given in 18.04/18.10 it would still only provide software rendering...
