Public bug reported: Both Matlab and Scilab (which are java based) fail when using the iris graphics driver. As a workaround you can make them work using MESA_LOADER_DRIVER_OVERRIDE=i965
There is a bug open for scilab at https://bugzilla.scilab.org/show_bug.cgi?id=13830 (in fact one of the issues marked as a duplicate there does probably contain more info). On the Matlab camp, the issue is known to the Matlab developers. However, it is really not an issue in Matlab, so they can only advice to use the i965 driver. The issue may be either in the Intel Iris driver, or in jogl (the java library that all these projects use for opengl). I would tend to think that the issue is in the iris driver not providing a proper opengl 3 compatibility profile (needed by jogl), but I am unsure about it.
