I have the same problem on a HP Omnibook XE3.
The following xorg.conf addition works great for me:

Identifier Configured Video Device
Driver intel
Option AccelMethod exa
Option MigrationHeuristic greedy
Option ExaNoComposite false

Booting off the livecd will probably be enough for testing. It might be
tricky to get the Xorg.0.log and
I don't really know. I was thinking of booting off of the CDROM without
actually doing the upgrade. Unfortunately, I haven't gotten to it yet.
