Thanks for letting us know the issue is resolved in Karmic.
I think this is likely not a severe enough issue to warrant an SRU, especially
since it can be worked around, so I'll close the bug at this point.

Status: Incomplete => Fix Released
Seems to be fixed in Karmic Alpha3 ( shells are now smoothy ;) ).
Doesn't work in Ubuntu <= 9.04, same problems exists on other distributions
e.g. Gentoo.
Workaround: Ctrl+Alt+FX -> Ctrl+Alt+F7 -> Ctrl+Alt+FX -> works
