Sorry, I totally forgot about this bug report.
I just tested the machine in question with Ubuntu 10.04 and the
backlight stays on when X starts on the Live CD (intel driver).
xbacklight says "No outputs have backlight property", but that's not
such a big issue.

Unfortunately it seems this bug is still an issue. Can you confirm this
issue exists with the most recent Lucid Lynx 10.04 release -

in Lucid, please test the latest 2.6.32 upstream kernel build -

This bug was reported a while ago and there hasn't been any activity in
it recently. We were wondering if this is still an issue? Can you try
with the latest development release of Ubuntu? ISO CD images are
available from http://cdimage.ubuntu.com/releases/karmic .
