You have been subscribed to a public bug: When using pylab/matplotlib under Ubuntu 8.10 (updated from 8.04) with the GTKAgg backend, either in scripts or interactively within ipython, the axes turn partially or fully black when zooming in. E.g., the following session from "ipython -pylab" produced the attached image:
