I have resolved this. Yeah, it surprised me too. I had to completely purge all of nvidia-glx and associated components from my system. This is how I did it. Shut down gdm, or kdm if appropriate sudo /etc/init.d/gdm stop at black screen, go to login ctrl + alt + f1 login at this po
