The problem is present for the first time in the release r594.
The problem exists because in "via_video.c" , line 377 and 378, the value of :
pBIOSInfo->Panel->NativeMode->Width and
pBIOSInfo->Panel->NativeMode->Height
is zero.
The patch below fix the problem.

I am reading your log file and I see you use the EXA acceleration method,
you have a line like this in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file:
Option "AccelMethod" "exa"
I have some problems with this option, try to remove it.

play video with Totem or VLC (MPlayer runs fine)

Please attach Xorg.log file after run mplayer with :
Option "PanelSize" "1024x768"
and without it.
Is this error exist in the latest openchrome revision?

I also edited my xorg.conf to this:
Section "Device"
Identifier "VIA Technologies, Inc. VT8378 [S3 UniChrome] Integrated Video"
Driver "openchrome"
Option "PanelSize" "1024x768"
EndSection
And that solved it for me. Now I can use VLC, Totem and Mplayer without
any problems.
